The state government says it is reviewing surveillance systems, emergency response plans and essential medical supplies to improve preparedness for a possible Ebola outbreak.
The Delta State Government has intensified efforts to strengthen its public health preparedness against a possible Ebola outbreak, as the Ministry of Health reviews disease surveillance systems and emergency response measures across the state.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Joseph Onojaeme, disclosed this during a meeting with the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, directors and staff of the Epidemiology Unit.

The meeting focused on assessing existing disease surveillance mechanisms, emergency response plans and the availability of essential resources required to respond effectively to a possible outbreak across Delta State’s 25 local government areas.
Onojaeme emphasised the importance of vigilance among health officials, urging them to ensure that suspected cases are identified, reported and investigated without delay.
According to him, effective surveillance, early detection and a timely response remain critical components of the state’s preparedness for infectious disease emergencies.
The commissioner directed the Epidemiology Unit to intensify disease monitoring at entry points, healthcare facilities and within communities to ensure that unusual health developments are promptly reported and investigated.
He also called for regular training of frontline health workers to improve their capacity to recognise and appropriately manage suspected cases of Ebola and other infectious diseases.
Onojaeme said the ministry was stepping up public awareness campaigns while strengthening designated health facilities to improve their readiness to handle emergency health situations.
He added that the state government would continue to provide personal protective equipment, testing kits and other essential medical supplies to support health workers and emergency response teams.
The commissioner urged residents to maintain good hygiene, follow official public health advisories and promptly report suspected symptoms to the appropriate health authorities.
He stressed that cooperation between residents and public health officials was essential to preventing the spread of infectious diseases and protecting communities throughout Delta State.
The renewed preparedness efforts underscore the importance of maintaining effective surveillance, ensuring adequate emergency supplies and strengthening coordination among health authorities in responding to potential public health threats.
