The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Delta State Council, has commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for institutionalising the payment of 13th-month salary to public servants in the state, describing the initiative as a major boost to workers’ welfare.
The labour union also conferred the honorary title of “Ukodo the Pace Setter” on the governor in recognition of what it described as his commitment to improving the welfare and living conditions of Delta workers.
In a statement signed by its chairman, Comrade Wilson Asekutu, the TUC said the decision to give the 13th-month salary a legal backing demonstrated the state government’s appreciation of workers’ contributions to the growth and development of Delta State.
The union noted that the initiative came at a time when prevailing economic challenges continued to place considerable pressure on workers’ incomes and household finances.
According to the TUC, the additional salary would provide financial relief to public servants and their families while strengthening their morale and commitment to public service.
The union explained that the title, “Ukodo the Pace Setter”, reflected its recognition of Oborevwori’s efforts to introduce policies with tangible benefits for the state workforce.
It stressed that workers who feel valued and adequately supported are more likely to remain motivated, productive and committed to their responsibilities.
The TUC reaffirmed its readiness to collaborate with the Oborevwori administration in advancing good governance, sustainable development and policies that improve the welfare of workers and other residents.
However, it emphasised that its relationship with the state government would continue to be guided by constructive engagement, mutual respect and social dialogue.
The union maintained that organised labour would continue to commend policies that promote workers’ interests while engaging the government on issues requiring further attention.
It also urged the state government to sustain its engagement with labour unions and pursue additional measures to strengthen workers’ purchasing power, enhance productivity and protect their dignity.
Addressing public servants across Delta State, the TUC said the introduction of the 13th-month salary demonstrated the importance of sustained dialogue between government and organised labour in achieving mutually beneficial outcomes.
The union, in turn, called on workers to reciprocate the gesture through dedication, discipline and improved service delivery, noting that their contributions remained essential to the effective implementation of government policies and programmes.
Expressing appreciation to Governor Oborevwori on behalf of its leadership and members, the TUC described the decision as a notable step towards improving the welfare of the Delta workforce.
“Your Excellency, you have taken a bold step in workers’ welfare. You have set a pace. Ukodo the Pace Setter,” the statement said.
The union’s commendation further highlights the importance of cooperation between the state government and organised labour in promoting industrial harmony and advancing policies aimed at improving workers’ welfare in Delta State.
