The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State has commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori over the reported reduction of the state’s inherited legacy debt from approximately ₦463 billion to ₦63 billion, representing a decrease of about ₦400 billion.

The party described the development, alongside the execution of major infrastructural projects across the three senatorial districts, as a demonstration of fiscal discipline, prudent financial management and responsible utilisation of public resources.

In a statement issued on Monday, November 2, 2026, by the State Publicity Secretary, Valentine Onojeghuo, Esq., the party said the development marked a significant milestone in Delta State’s financial and developmental history.

Reacting to the reported debt reduction, Delta APC State Chairman, Chief Solomon Arenyeka, JP, said Governor Oborevwori had demonstrated that financial responsibility and infrastructural development could be pursued simultaneously.

According to Arenyeka, the administration’s reported reduction of approximately ₦400 billion in inherited liabilities, while sustaining major infrastructure projects, reflects a commitment to responsible governance.

He stated:

“His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Elder Sheriff F.O. Oborevwori, has demonstrated that fiscal responsibility and infrastructural development can go hand in hand. Reducing the state’s inherited legacy debt by approximately N400 billion while simultaneously executing major infrastructural projects across Delta State is a remarkable achievement.

“Governance is not merely about accumulating debts in the name of development; it is about ensuring that every available naira is judiciously utilised to deliver tangible benefits to the people.”

The APC chairman further claimed that no previous administration since the creation of Delta State in 1991 had achieved a comparable level of debt reduction while simultaneously sustaining major infrastructural development across the state.

He described the reported achievement as a significant milestone, adding that the Oborevwori administration remained committed to expanding infrastructure, creating economic opportunities and improving the welfare of Deltans.

Arenyeka also expressed confidence that the state would witness further development initiatives across different sectors under the governor’s leadership.

The Delta APC noted that the reported reduction in inherited debt underscores the importance of balancing infrastructure development with sound financial management.

The party maintained that addressing inherited financial obligations while implementing development projects could help strengthen the state’s economic foundation without excessive dependence on borrowing.

It also commended Governor Oborevwori’s stated commitment to clearing the outstanding legacy debt by the first quarter of 2027.

According to the party, achieving that target would further improve the state’s financial position, promote fiscal sustainability and establish a stronger economic foundation for future generations.

Delta APC stressed that responsible governance should not be measured solely by the construction of physical infrastructure but also by the effective management of public finances, reduction of inherited liabilities and establishment of sustainable economic structures.
