Group questions the accuracy of a publication alleging hostility towards the Kogi West senator and calls for verification and corrections where necessary.
Ayere Concern Youth has called for greater accuracy in political reporting following a controversial online publication claiming that Senator Sunday Steve Karimi was booed during the 2026 Ayere Day celebration.
The report, published by Latest New Gists, alleged that youths from Ijumu expressed dissatisfaction with Karimi’s performance as senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District.
The publication also suggested that the incident escalated into a confrontation.
In a response made available to the public, Ayere Concern Youth disputed the account, insisting that the senator’s reception at the cultural event was markedly different from the picture painted by the online report.
According to the group, Karimi’s arrival was greeted with jubilation, while the Asiwaju of Ayere Kingdom, Asiwaju Prince Dr. Olatunji Olusoji, personally welcomed him and accompanied him around the event tents.
The group said the senator exchanged pleasantries with dignitaries, guests and other attendees during the occasion.
It argued that the account it provided raised questions about the need to establish the facts surrounding the event before presenting allegations of public hostility as news.
Accuracy Must Come Before Sensational Headlines
Ayere Concern Youth emphasised that political reporting requires careful verification, especially when a publication could influence public perceptions of elected representatives and communities.
The group said media organisations should distinguish between verified facts, eyewitness accounts, political opinions and allegations that remain contested.
It also urged the publishers of the disputed story to review the report and publish corrections if their verification process establishes that any material claims were inaccurate.
The call reflects a wider professional principle: a headline should accurately represent the evidence contained in a report, while affected parties should have a reasonable opportunity to respond to serious allegations.
Although political criticism is a legitimate part of democratic discourse, claims about booing, confrontation and public rejection should be supported by credible evidence.
Cultural Events Should Not Be Reduced to Political Disputes
The group further warned that contested accounts of public gatherings could fuel avoidable tension if circulated without adequate verification.
It urged residents and political actors in Okunland to preserve the cultural importance of Ayere Day and resist attempts to turn the celebration into a source of unnecessary division.
Ayere Concern Youth maintained that the event should remain a platform for cultural pride, hospitality and community solidarity.
The group called on members of the public to consider competing accounts carefully and avoid treating disputed allegations as proven facts.
