Akwashiki raised the concern during plenary on Monday while presenting a Matter of Public Interest before the House in Lafia.

He cited recent abductions in Agyaragu and Agunji communities, expressing concern over the safety of residents and the need for a stronger response from the state government and relevant security agencies.

According to the lawmaker, two people were reportedly kidnapped in Agyaragu on Sunday, while other residents had been abducted in Agunji in the preceding days.

He disclosed that the two victims abducted in Agyaragu were still in the custody of their captors, who were demanding ransom.

Akwashiki urged the authorities to take urgent measures to secure the release of the victims and prevent further incidents.

He said the recurring abductions had created an atmosphere of fear among his constituents, making it difficult for residents to enjoy peace of mind.

Assembly Calls for Immediate Security Intervention

Responding to the matter, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Dr. Danladi Jatau, expressed concern over reports of kidnapping in Lafia and other parts of Nasarawa State.

He noted that the incidents had caused anxiety among residents and negatively affected economic activities.

Jatau said the House had resolved to call on Governor Abdullahi Sule to direct the Commissioner of Police, DSS, NSCDC and other relevant agencies to intensify surveillance and security operations across the state.

The Speaker also emphasised the importance of community participation in tackling insecurity.

He urged traditional rulers, chiefs, village heads and vigilante groups to work closely with security agencies to identify unfamiliar movements and provide relevant information that could help prevent criminal activities.

Jatau subsequently directed the Clerk of the House to transmit the resolution to Governor Sule for necessary action.

Lawmakers Back Stronger Security Operations

Other lawmakers, including Hon. Esson Mairiga, Hon. Onarigu Onah Kana, Hon. Ibrahim Abdullahi Sa’ad, Hon. Suleiman Yakubu Azara, Rt. Hon. Abel Yakubu Bala and Hon. Larry Ven-Bawa, supported the motion.

They called for increased security presence and stronger coordination among relevant agencies to address kidnapping and other security challenges.

Although the lawmakers acknowledged the state government’s efforts to maintain peace, they called for more intensive measures to respond to the latest concerns.
