Dennis Osadebay University (DOU), Asaba, Delta State, has entered into a strategic partnership with the Brazil Alumni Association in Nigeria (BAAN) to expand opportunities in academic exchange, research, scholarships and foreign language education.

The partnership was formalised through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which the two organisations said would promote knowledge transfer, cultural engagement and technology development between Nigeria and Brazil.

The agreement is also expected to create wider opportunities for students, researchers and members of the university community to access international academic and professional experiences.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor of DOU, Prof. Samuel Aghalino, described the agreement as a significant milestone in the university’s efforts to internationalise its programmes and strengthen its engagement with institutions and organisations outside Nigeria.

Aghalino said the collaboration would expose students to additional skills, global perspectives and international experiences that would enhance their competitiveness in the labour market.

According to him, the partnership would provide opportunities in areas including research, student and staff exchange, scholarships, computing, medical sciences, technology transfer and other academic programmes.

He explained that the agreement would be anchored on cooperation and knowledge sharing, with the university seeking to expose its students and researchers to global opportunities while adapting relevant international knowledge and innovations to address local challenges.

The Vice-Chancellor further noted that international partnerships had become increasingly important to the development of modern universities, particularly as institutions of higher learning continue to collaborate across national boundaries in research, technology and knowledge production.

Also speaking, the National President of BAAN, Chief Dr Francis Utomi, said the partnership would create valuable opportunities for students, researchers and other members of the DOU community.

Utomi expressed optimism that the initiative would deepen academic and professional relations between Nigeria and Brazil while enabling the university community to benefit from international expertise, research networks and collaborative opportunities.

Representing the Consul General of the Brazilian Embassy in Nigeria, Mr Adeniran Arimoro stressed the importance of strengthening educational, cultural and professional relations between Nigeria and Brazil.

Arimoro described education as a veritable platform for building stronger ties between both countries, noting that increased academic collaboration could promote mutual understanding, professional exchanges and long-term cooperation.

BAAN to Establish Foreign Language Centre at DOU

A major component of the agreement is the establishment of a foreign language learning centre by BAAN under the Faculty of Arts of Dennis Osadebay University.

The centre is expected to strengthen foreign language education at the university and equip students with language skills that could broaden their academic, professional and cultural exposure.

The university said the partnership would further enhance its international outlook while expanding opportunities for students and staff in academic exchange, research, scholarships, language education, cultural engagement and knowledge transfer.

The MoU therefore represents another step towards positioning DOU as an institution increasingly connected to international academic networks, while creating platforms through which students and researchers can participate in global knowledge exchange.
