Inside APC Youth Network West Africa’s Weekly Food Distribution: Relief for Vulnerable Families Amid Economic Hardship

As heavy rain drenched parts of Lagos on Friday, dozens of residents gathered at the All Progressives Congress Youth Network West Africa (APCYN-WA) Secretariat in Agidingbi, Ikeja, where volunteers distributed cooked meals and raw food items under a weekly humanitarian programme designed to support vulnerable households.
The initiative, which commenced last Friday, is sponsored by the Director-General of APCYN-WA, Hon. Olutunde Gideon Igbasan. According to the organisers, the programme is expected to hold every Friday as part of the group’s community outreach and welfare intervention.
Our correspondent observed beneficiaries arriving despite the adverse weather, with many waiting patiently to receive food assistance. Volunteers coordinated the distribution, ensuring recipients received either ready-to-eat meals or staple food items intended for family consumption.
The programme comes at a time when many Nigerians continue to grapple with rising food prices, inflation, and declining household purchasing power.
For many residents, charitable interventions such as food distribution have become an important source of temporary relief.
Several beneficiaries who spoke with our Correspondent described the initiative as timely, saying it had helped cushion the impact of the country’s economic challenges.
Some said they hoped the programme would remain consistent and expand to accommodate more families.
Officials of APCYN-WA said the outreach forms part of the organisation’s broader commitment to community development and humanitarian service. They maintained that the programme was intended to assist vulnerable residents regardless of political affiliation.
However, while humanitarian interventions by political organisations often attract praise from beneficiaries, governance experts note that such programmes also invite questions about sustainability, transparency, and long-term impact.
Social policy analysts argue that although food donations provide immediate relief, they should complement—not replace—government-led social protection programmes capable of addressing poverty on a larger scale.
They also recommend that organisations implementing such interventions publish clear information on funding sources, beneficiary selection processes, and distribution records to promote accountability and public confidence.
Community development advocates further contend that regular food assistance is most effective when combined with empowerment initiatives such as vocational training, entrepreneurship support, healthcare access, and educational opportunities that enable beneficiaries to become economically self-reliant.
At the APCYN-WA Secretariat on Friday, there was no indication of disorder during the exercise, and volunteers appeared to manage the distribution in an orderly manner despite the large turnout.
Whether the initiative will evolve into a broader social investment programme remains to be seen.
For now, the weekly distribution has become a source of relief for many struggling households in the Agidingbi area, reflecting the increasing role of non-governmental and political organisations in responding to the economic pressures facing many Nigerian families.
