Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has directed Julius Berger Nigeria Plc to commence remedial works on the washed-out section of the East-West Road at Agbarho in Ughelli North Local Government Area.
The State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, made this known in a statement issued on Thursday in Asaba.
Aniagwu said the directive became necessary following the collapse of the section of the federal highway, which has disrupted movement and created hardship for road users.
He attributed the failure of the road to strong erosive forces triggered by heavy rainfall.
Although the East-West Road is a Federal Government-owned infrastructure, Aniagwu said Governor Oborevwori was concerned about the impact of the damage on Deltans and other Nigerians using the busy route.
He said the governor consequently directed Julius Berger Nigeria Plc to undertake remedial works on the affected portion.
Oborevwori Prioritises Infrastructure Response
According to Aniagwu, the intervention reflects the state government’s commitment to responding to infrastructure challenges based on their effect on citizens.
He said the administration would not allow jurisdictional boundaries to prevent it from supporting efforts to address urgent infrastructure problems affecting residents.
Aniagwu described the East-West Road as a major economic artery serving the Niger Delta and facilitating the movement of people, agricultural produce, goods and services.
He warned that significant disruption along the route could affect transport operators, traders, businesses and commuters.
The commissioner assured road users that the intervention would help address the immediate difficulties and improve traffic flow.
He also appealed to motorists to exercise caution while repair works continue.
Partnership With Federal Agencies
Aniagwu said the Delta State Government would continue to collaborate with Federal Government agencies and private-sector partners in tackling infrastructure challenges.
He said the approach was consistent with the Oborevwori administration’s broader infrastructure programme under the MORE Agenda.
According to him, the ultimate objective is to ensure that critical infrastructure remains functional and continues to support economic activities and the wellbeing of residents.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has ordered Julius Berger to repair the washed-out Agbarho section of the East-West Road in Delta State.
