2027 Benue Governorship: Group Predicts Tough Re-election Battle for Alia, Backs Aondoakaa
The Alliance for Truth and Democracy (ATD) has declared that Benue State Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia faces an uphill task in securing a second term in the 2027 governorship election, arguing that growing public dissatisfaction with his administration could shape the outcome of the polls.
In a statement titled “2027: Why Alia Is Headed for Defeat and Aondoakaa Is Poised for Victory,” the group said the forthcoming governorship election would serve as a referendum on Governor Alia’s performance since assuming office in 2023.

ATD claimed that many residents were increasingly questioning the administration’s handling of insecurity, infrastructure, economic development and workers’ welfare, insisting that the election would be determined by the governor’s record in office.
According to the group, insecurity remains one of the biggest concerns confronting the state, alleging that several communities have continued to suffer attacks, displacement and disruption of farming activities.
ATD further argued that despite increased federal allocations and other revenue sources available to the state following the removal of fuel subsidy, many residents were yet to feel the impact of government spending.
The statement also raised concerns over workers’ welfare, pension obligations, healthcare delivery, unemployment and recurring industrial actions in tertiary institutions.
The group alleged that development projects were concentrated in a few urban centres while many rural communities continued to experience inadequate government presence.
The Alliance for Truth and Democracy also claimed that the political coalition that supported Governor Alia’s emergence in the 2023 election had weakened due to internal disagreements and the departure of key political allies.
According to the group, the governor’s relationship with several influential stakeholders has deteriorated, creating new political alignments ahead of the 2027 governorship contest.
It argued that the growing dissatisfaction among former allies could pose a significant challenge to the governor’s re-election ambition.
Aondoakaa Presented as Alternative Candidate
The group expressed support for Chief Michael Kaase Aondoakaa, SAN, describing the former Attorney-General of the Federation as a competent and experienced leader capable of addressing Benue’s developmental challenges.
ATD said Aondoakaa’s experience in governance, law and public administration positions him as a credible alternative for voters seeking change in the state.
The group maintained that his growing acceptance across various political and professional circles reflects increasing public interest in an alternative leadership
The statement added that the outcome of the 2027 governorship election would ultimately depend on the judgment of Benue voters, particularly those in rural communities.
According to ATD, issues such as security, infrastructure, workers’ welfare, economic opportunities and delivery of campaign promises are expected to dominate political debates as the election draws closer.
The group expressed confidence that Chief Michael Kaase Aondoakaa would emerge victorious if current political trends continue.
