PDP Condemns Fresh Killings in Benue, Demands Urgent Action on Insecurity
The Benue State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the recent wave of killings in the state, describing the attacks as tragic and unacceptable, while calling on Governor Hyacinth Alia to take decisive steps to end the worsening insecurity.
In a statement issued on Friday by the State Publicity Secretary, Bright Yima Antyo, the opposition party expressed deep sorrow over the killing of Professor Gabriel Saawua Nyityo of Father Moses Orshio Adasu University and his younger brother, Iorngee John Nyityo, who were reportedly murdered by armed attackers suspected to be herdsmen.
The PDP also mourned the death of former Benue State Secretary to the State Government, Professor David Salifu, who reportedly died from gunshot wounds sustained during an attack by suspected kidnappers.
The party described the incidents as painful reminders of the deteriorating security situation in Benue State, noting that the continued loss of lives has become a source of grave concern.
It extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the university community, colleagues, friends and all those affected by the attacks, stressing that no family should suffer such devastating losses due to what it described as government’s failure to adequately protect lives and property.
The PDP expressed concern that despite the persistent killings across the state, the government’s response has not matched the level of urgency expected in addressing the security crisis.
According to the party, expressions of sympathy alone are insufficient, insisting that the people of Benue deserve concrete actions that will prevent further bloodshed.
“Benue must never be turned into a killing field where respected citizens, public servants, farmers, students and innocent residents are murdered with impunity while fear becomes the new normal,” the statement read.
The opposition party urged Governor Hyacinth Alia to demonstrate stronger leadership by working closely with security agencies, strengthening community-based security initiatives, ensuring those responsible for the attacks are apprehended and prosecuted, and providing meaningful support to families of victims.
It further called for a shift from reactive responses to proactive security measures capable of preventing future attacks.
The PDP reaffirmed its solidarity with the people of Benue in demanding justice for Professor Gabriel Saawua Nyityo, Iorngee John Nyityo, Professor David Salifu and all innocent victims of insecurity across the state.
“The blood of our people cries out for justice. Benue deserves security. Benue deserves leadership. Benue deserves better,” the statement concluded.
