Nasarawa lawmaker pledges continued championing of women’s course

The Chairman of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly Committee on Women Affairs and Social Services, Dr. Hajarat Danyaro Ibrahim, has identified stronger collaboration between government and non-governmental organisations as critical to advancing the rights and welfare of women.

Danyaro stated this on Friday when she received officials of the Abuja-based CLEEN Project at her office in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Lafia.

The organisation, led by its Project Coordinator, Mr. Bernard Obokay, visited the Assembly to present its advocacy agenda and seek legislative support for initiatives targeting women.

Obokay explained that CLEEN Project works to promote fairness, justice, political participation and inclusion for women.

He said the organisation wanted the legislature to consider provisions that would improve the lives of women in Nasarawa State.

He also urged the Assembly to support the domestication of relevant national policies that could strengthen the protection and welfare of women.

The CLEEN Project representative noted that Nasarawa had previously demonstrated leadership in legislative domestication by becoming the first state in Northern Nigeria to domesticate the Child Rights Act.

Receiving the delegation, Danyaro expressed appreciation for the confidence placed in her and the state legislature by the organisation.

She pledged to continue championing the course of women and work towards ensuring that issues affecting women receive adequate legislative attention.

According to her, non-governmental organisations have an important role to play in highlighting challenges confronting women and supporting government in developing sustainable solutions.

She therefore promised to deepen partnerships with NGOs and other stakeholders committed to advancing women’s development in the state.

The delegation was accompanied to the Assembly by officials of the Nasarawa State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Services.

The engagement underscored the need for sustained collaboration among lawmakers, government agencies and civil society organisations in advancing women’s participation in governance and public affairs.
