The Director of Women Mobilisation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, Dr Betta Edu, has called for sustained grassroots engagement following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s assurances of support for proposed legislation designed to improve women’s representation in elective and appointive positions.
Edu commended the President for his commitment to advancing the issue, describing the proposed bills as an important opportunity to strengthen women’s participation in Nigeria’s governance structure.
Her reaction came after Tinubu addressed women leaders during the inauguration of the Presidential Campaign Council at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The President acknowledged the strategic importance of women in political mobilisation, describing them as a major force in sustaining democratic participation and strengthening political organisations.
“You women are the greatest mobilisers and foot soldiers of our democracy,” Tinubu said.
He subsequently urged women leaders to intensify their advocacy around six proposed bills intended to improve women’s representation, assuring them of his commitment to working towards their realisation.
“Go and work for them, and I assure you that they will come to fruition,” the President stated.
In an interview shortly after the President’s address, Edu expressed appreciation for the assurances, emphasising the importance of translating political commitments into meaningful opportunities for women.
She reaffirmed her determination to deepen engagement across communities and strengthen grassroots structures capable of encouraging women to participate more actively in the political process.
Edu also underscored her commitment to working under the supervision of First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu in advancing women’s participation and political mobilisation across Nigeria.
According to her, sustained engagement at the community level would remain important to building awareness, encouraging participation and strengthening women’s involvement in democratic activities.
She assured President Tinubu that women would reciprocate his gesture through continued grassroots mobilisation and political engagement ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The proposed legislation has drawn attention to the wider debate over women’s representation in Nigeria, where advocates have continued to call for more inclusive political institutions and improved opportunities for women to occupy leadership positions.
While the President’s assurances have offered encouragement to supporters of the proposed reforms, the legislative process and eventual implementation will be critical to determining their practical impact.
For Edu and other women mobilisation leaders, the immediate task includes sustaining advocacy, expanding community engagement and ensuring that the discussion about women’s representation remains prominent in the national political conversation.
