The Director of Women Mobilisation of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, Dr Betta Edu, has commended Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for unveiling a N1 billion empowerment fund targeting 5,000 women in Edo State.
Edu described the initiative as an opportunity to strengthen women-owned businesses, improve household incomes and expand economic participation at the grassroots.

The empowerment fund was unveiled alongside the inauguration of 50 compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered buses in Edo State as part of interventions intended to cushion the economic effects of fuel subsidy removal.
In her reaction, Edu praised the First Lady and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for initiatives aimed at addressing transportation challenges and supporting women affected by prevailing economic pressures.
She noted that women-owned small businesses could benefit from access to financial support, particularly where funding helps entrepreneurs sustain their operations, expand their customer base and create additional livelihood opportunities.

The APC women mobilisation director also emphasised the importance of ensuring that empowerment programmes translate into tangible benefits for the intended beneficiaries.
The proposed fund is expected to target 5,000 women, although its eventual impact will depend on the selection process, disbursement arrangements and the support available to beneficiaries after receiving assistance.
Edu further commended the CNG bus initiative, describing it as an intervention that could help commuters manage transportation expenses while opening employment opportunities in the gas-powered transport sector.
She highlighted the potential for young Nigerians to acquire technical skills in vehicle maintenance, engineering, driving and fleet management.
Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo welcomed the transportation initiative, while Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo also commended the Federal Government’s economic reform programme.
Edu reaffirmed the Directorate of Women Mobilisation’s commitment to engaging women across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas in support of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

She said sustained engagement with women at the grassroots remained central to the Directorate’s mobilisation efforts.
The empowerment programme places attention on women’s access to economic opportunities at a time when households and small businesses are navigating higher living and operating costs.
Transparent implementation, accessible information and effective monitoring will be important in determining whether the fund achieves its stated objectives.
