Member representing Ughelli North, Ughelli South and Udu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Francis Ejiroghene Waive, has clarified that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent remarks cautioning state governments against constructing unnecessary flyovers were not directed at Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
In a statement, Waive maintained that the flyovers completed and those currently under construction by the Delta State Government were designed to address long-standing traffic congestion in strategic locations across the state.
According to the federal lawmaker, the projects were conceived after careful assessment of the state’s infrastructure requirements and were justified by increasing vehicular traffic in the affected areas.
He noted that the Federal Government had, on several occasions, recognised Delta State’s achievements in road infrastructure, flyover construction and other development initiatives, even before similar projects became widespread in other parts of the country.
Waive argued that Governor Oborevwori’s administration had adopted a balanced development strategy by investing simultaneously in roads, bridges, healthcare, education and social welfare programmes.
“The flyovers constructed and those currently under construction by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori are absolutely necessary. Deltans can testify that they are all located in areas where severe traffic gridlock is a regular occurrence,” Waive stated.
The lawmaker dismissed criticisms from opposition figures over the ongoing flyover projects, describing them as politically motivated and inconsistent with the realities experienced by residents.
He said the administration’s infrastructure investments had improved connectivity, eased traffic movement and contributed to economic activities in various parts of the state.
Waive further expressed confidence that Governor Oborevwori’s performance in office would strengthen public support ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
According to him, many residents remain committed to the continuity of the governor’s M.O.R.E. Agenda, which he said aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda at the federal level.
The lawmaker urged the governor to sustain the momentum by expanding road networks, constructing additional bridges and flyovers where necessary, and strengthening social investment programmes targeted at improving the living standards of the people.
He also congratulated Governor Oborevwori in advance on what he described as an anticipated victory in the 2027 governorship election, expressing optimism that the administration would continue to deliver democratic dividends across Delta State.
