Delta State has recorded another milestone in healthcare delivery as Asaba Specialist Hospital commenced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) services with the installation of a state-of-the-art Siemens 1.5 Tesla helium-free MRI scanner, becoming the first health facility in Nigeria to deploy the cutting-edge diagnostic technology.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital, Dr. Peace Ighosewe, who described the achievement as a significant advancement in healthcare services and medical diagnostics in Delta State.

Dr. Ighosewe commended Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Oborevwori for what she described as a visionary investment in the health sector, saying the acquisition underscores the administration’s commitment to expanding access to quality and affordable healthcare for residents.
According to the statement, the hospital officially flagged off MRI services by providing free MRI scans to patients for two days, with the programme concluding on Friday. More than 10 patients benefited from the initiative.
She explained that the installation of the advanced Siemens 1.5 Tesla helium-free MRI system would improve access to specialised diagnostic imaging, eliminate the need for many patients to travel outside Delta State for MRI examinations, and enable faster, more accurate diagnosis and treatment of various medical conditions.
The CMD noted that the innovative MRI scanner represents a major breakthrough in modern medical imaging technology and is expected to significantly strengthen the hospital’s diagnostic capabilities while improving patient care.
Dr. Ighosewe reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to delivering accessible, patient-centred, and technology-driven healthcare services, stressing that the initiative aligns with Governor Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E. Agenda, which prioritises improved healthcare infrastructure and quality service delivery across Delta State.
She assured residents that Asaba Specialist Hospital would continue to leverage cutting-edge medical technology and highly skilled healthcare professionals to enhance healthcare outcomes and provide world-class medical services to the people of the state.
The introduction of Nigeria’s first helium-free MRI scanner is expected to position Delta State as a leading destination for advanced diagnostic healthcare, while reducing medical referrals outside the state and improving access to life-saving diagnostic services.
