The Anambra State Government, under the leadership of Governor Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, is intensifying efforts to position the state as one of Africa’s leading centres for medical education and healthcare workforce development through strategic investments in human capital and health infrastructure.
With a growing network of accredited federal, state-owned and private medical training institutions, Anambra is leveraging its educational strengths to become a major producer of highly skilled healthcare professionals in response to increasing global demand.
The initiative aligns with Governor Soludo’s vision of preparing Anambra for a diversified, knowledge-driven economy beyond Nigeria’s dependence on crude oil. In his People’s Manifesto, the governor identified human capital development as a key pillar for sustainable economic growth and healthcare transformation.

As part of the administration’s healthcare agenda, the manifesto prioritises the training, recruitment, retention and motivation of medical personnel to strengthen secondary and tertiary healthcare services across the state.
Central to this vision is the ongoing construction of the Anambra State University of Medical Sciences, a flagship project expected to expand the state’s capacity for training world-class healthcare professionals.
Speaking on the project, the Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, said the state is steadily advancing towards becoming one of Africa’s foremost medical training hubs.
According to him, Anambra is on course to emerge as one of the continent’s largest producers of quality healthcare professionals within the next five to 10 years.
Dr. Obidike also highlighted the state’s recent partnership with the Canadian Education Council, which saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide international exposure for students of the Anambra State-owned School of Nursing, Nkpor.
The agreement is expected to enhance global learning opportunities for nursing students while strengthening the state’s reputation as a centre for internationally competitive medical education.
Analysts say these initiatives reflect the Soludo administration’s deliberate investment in human capital development and its broader strategy of transforming Anambra from a source of talent migration into a destination for quality education, healthcare innovation and professional excellence.
Beyond public sector initiatives, private investment in modern laboratories, specialist hospitals and healthcare facilities has continued to expand across the state, further reinforcing Anambra’s emergence as a regional healthcare destination.

Stakeholders believe the combination of sustained government investment, expanding private sector participation and internationally aligned medical education programmes is laying the foundation for a robust healthcare ecosystem capable of competing on the global stage.
If sustained, the ongoing reforms could significantly enhance Anambra’s capacity to train highly skilled medical professionals, improve healthcare service delivery and position the state as one of Africa’s most important centres for medical education and healthcare innovation.
