Murtala Ajaka Apologises to Yahaya Bello, Calls for Unity in Kogi
Former governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kogi State, Yakubu Murtala Ajaka, has tendered an apology to former Governor Yahaya Bello, urging reconciliation and unity among political actors in the state.
Ajaka, in a statement shared via his social media platforms on Monday, said the move was part of his broader commitment to fostering peace, unity, and progress in Kogi State.
Reflecting on the November 2023 governorship election, the SDP chieftain described the contest as a defining moment in the state’s political history, noting that his ambition to lead was driven by a desire to promote inclusiveness, justice, and development.
He expressed deep appreciation to his supporters across the state, including elders, youths, and women, for their loyalty and sacrifices during the electioneering period.
Ajaka also paid tribute to supporters who lost their lives in the course of the political struggle, praying for the repose of their souls and comfort for their families.
The former candidate, however, acknowledged that the election period created tensions and strained relationships, particularly between himself and Bello. He clarified that their disagreements were not personal but stemmed from differing political positions and the intensity of the campaign.
“In the overriding interest of peace, unity, and the progress of our dear state, I believe it is both necessary and honourable to rise above the past,” he stated.
Ajaka offered a “profound apology” to Bello for any hurt caused by his actions or remarks during the period, stressing his decision to let go of grievances in the spirit of reconciliation.
He urged political stakeholders and citizens to prioritise the peace and collective advancement of Kogi State over individual ambitions, calling for renewed collaboration and a forward-looking approach to governance.
Ajaka reaffirmed his commitment to the service of the people and to the ideals of peace, inclusion, and sustainable development in the state.
