Alleged threats against the senator highlight the need for transparency as debate grows over increased council allocations.
A debate over the management of public funds has taken a political turn in Kogi West, following allegations that Yagba West Local Government Chairman, Hon. Tosin Olokun, threatened to frustrate Senator Sunday Steve Karimi’s re-election bid.
The controversy emerged after Karimi spoke about increased local government allocations under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, arguing that additional public revenue should translate into improved living conditions for citizens.
During a town hall meeting in Anyigba, Dekina/Bassa Federal Constituency, the senator acknowledged the economic difficulties confronting Nigerians but maintained that the benefits of fuel subsidy removal should become visible through effective management of public resources.
He stated that an average local government in Kogi State receives approximately ₦500 million monthly.
The meeting was organised by stakeholders under the Win With Tinubu/Shettima (WWTS) project to mobilise support for the president’s re-election.
Karimi’s comments were subsequently followed by allegations that Olokun, who also serves as Kogi State ALGON chairman, addressed APC supporters at his residence in Egbe and threatened to wage a political battle against the senator.
According to sources who claimed to have attended the gathering, Olokun allegedly vowed to frustrate Karimi’s campaign across the seven local government areas of Kogi West.
The sources also alleged that he spoke of compiling a list of political appointees perceived to be sympathetic to the senator for possible removal from office.
Other claims suggested that the chairman threatened action against supporters circulating information he considered unverified concerning council allocations.
The allegations have not been independently confirmed. The account available for this report did not include a response from Olokun or documentary evidence establishing the claims.
A senior APC figure who reportedly attended the meeting questioned the alleged reaction to the senator’s remarks, arguing that public officials should be prepared to explain how increased allocations are being used.
The party chieftain maintained that transparency over local government finances would help residents understand whether additional resources were producing meaningful improvements in their communities.
The controversy reportedly intensified on Saturday evening when youths took to the streets of Egbe chanting slogans supporting Karimi and opposing alleged intimidation.
Mrs Janet Igunnu, a businesswoman and resident, said accountability was fundamental to democratic governance and that questions about public expenditure should not automatically be treated as political attacks.
The central issue remains how the increased allocations are being translated into public services and development at the grassroots. Establishing the precise amounts received by individual councils and how the funds were spent would require relevant financial records and official explanations.

The allegations surrounding the political dispute also warrant a fair response from those named.
As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections, the controversy offers a reminder that public finance debates should be settled through verifiable information, institutional oversight and open engagement—not unsubstantiated accusations or intimidation.
