The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Benue State for the 2027 election, Chief Michael Kaase Aondoakaa, SAN, has called for wider consultations among political, traditional and community leaders in the fight against insecurity in the state.
Aondoakaa made the appeal during a condolence visit to Abaashwa community in Mbaasar, Nzorov Council Ward, Guma Local Government Area, following a recent armed herdsmen attack in the community.
Several people were reportedly killed while others sustained injuries in the attack.
The former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice described the incident as unacceptable, saying Benue residents should not be forced to abandon their ancestral homes because of insecurity.
He urged stakeholders to put aside political differences whenever the safety and security of the people were at stake.
“Security must come first at all times. It is the bedrock of every meaningful development,” Aondoakaa said.
He added that residents must be able to live in their communities, access their farms and pursue their livelihoods without fear.
Tinubu’s Security Measures
Aondoakaa commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the establishment of an Army Division headquartered in Makurdi and the 11 Brigade in Gboko.
He also acknowledged Federal Government measures aimed at improving the welfare and remuneration of military personnel.
The former minister urged communities across Benue to support security agencies with credible intelligence capable of helping them prevent attacks and protect vulnerable communities.
Call for Wider Consultation
Aondoakaa said the complexity of Benue’s security challenges required collective action rather than political blame.
He urged those in positions of authority to consult former governors and other individuals with experience in handling the state’s security challenges.
According to him, traditional rulers, political leaders, community leaders, security agencies and residents all have important roles to play in securing the state.
He stressed that security should not be determined by political party affiliation.
Tribute to Ortom
Aondoakaa also commended former Governor Samuel Ortom, a son of Guma, for his administration’s efforts towards protecting Benue communities.
He recalled that the Ortom administration enacted the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law in 2017 as part of efforts to address conflicts linked to open grazing.
Community Leaders React
The Acting Tyoor Nzorov, Zaki Emmanuel Atoka, who spoke on behalf of the community, thanked Aondoakaa for visiting the victims and families at a difficult time.
He said the visit offered comfort to the bereaved and demonstrated solidarity with the community.

The President of Nzorov Development Association, Kenneth Pool, equally praised the PDP candidate for standing with the people during their period of mourning.
Aondoakaa was accompanied by political associates, friends and some members of the Benue PDP State Working Committee.
