Edo Police Debunk Alleged Kidnapping of Green Park Academy Students
The Edo State Police Command has dismissed as false and misleading reports circulating on social media alleging that students of Green Park Academy, Aduwawa, near Benin City, were kidnapped.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Eno Ikoedem, the Command described the report as unfounded and capable of causing unnecessary panic among residents.
According to the statement, the false claim was propagated by a woman popularly known as “Azawoman” and has generated unwarranted concern among members of the public.
“The Edo State Police Command has become aware of a misleading and unfounded report circulating on social media alleging that students of Green Park Academy, Aduwawa, Benin City, were kidnapped,” the statement read.
“The false narrative, which is being propagated by a woman popularly known as ‘Azawoman,’ has generated unnecessary concern among members of the public.”
The police spokesperson disclosed that following a thorough verification and preliminary investigation, the Command established that no kidnapping incident occurred at the school as alleged.
“Findings revealed that the report is entirely false, lacks any factual basis, and was deliberately disseminated to misinform the public and create unwarranted panic within the state,” ASP Ikoedem stated.
The Command strongly condemned what it described as the reckless spread of false information, warning that such actions could undermine public confidence, create fear among residents, and distract security agencies from addressing genuine security concerns.
The police noted that the dissemination of false information constitutes a threat to public order and assured residents that such conduct would not be tolerated.
Consequently, the Command said it has commenced efforts to apprehend the originator of the false report for questioning and possible prosecution in line with existing laws.
The Police Command also urged members of the public to exercise caution and responsibility in their use of social media by verifying information through credible and official channels before sharing it.
Residents were further encouraged to report security-related concerns through appropriate law enforcement channels to facilitate prompt verification and response.
The Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, reassured residents that the security situation across the state remains under control and that the Command remains committed to protecting lives and property.
He also expressed appreciation for the continued cooperation of law-abiding citizens and called for sustained public support in the collective effort to maintain peace, security, and public order throughout Edo State.
