The 2027 contest for Yagba Federal Constituency is fast approaching and as expected, many names are being mentioned. But let us be frank with ourselves: there is no point embarking on a fruitless venture. The wisest decision other candidates can take now is to support the incumbent, Hon. Leke Abejide.
Nigerian voters have evolved. The era when people voted blindly because of party logo is over. Nigerians are now better informed, more conscious and more interested in the track record of the candidate than the party that is sponsoring him. They ask a simple question: What have you done for the people? This new political awareness is what will decide Yagba in 2027.
If you doubt this new reality, look at what is happening at the national level. Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State is a PDP Governor, yet he has openly declared that he will work for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is of the APC in 2027. Why? Because of performance. Despite party difference, Governor Adeleke has acknowledged what the President has achieved so far. Achievement has become more powerful than party affiliation. The same thing will happen in Yagba.
When it comes to track record, no one in the race comes close to Elder Leke. His name echoes across the nooks and crannies of Yagba and beyond, not because of noise on social media but because of people-centred achievements that people can see and touch.
Hon. Leke did not wait to make promises; he delivered. His massive educational support programme has paid WAEC fees and given scholarships to thousands of Yagba students who would have dropped out of school. Hundreds of widows and youths have been empowered with startup capital, tricycles, motorcycles and grinding machines to make them self-reliant.
In infrastructure, he has facilitated the grading of rural roads, provision of motorized boreholes in communities that had suffered years of water scarcity and distribution of transformers to restore electricity to long-dark communities. In health, his medical outreaches and hospital bills support have saved lives.
This is why the people will choose him again over other candidates. Yagba people are not looking for a new face to experiment with; they are looking for proven capacity and compassion.
Therefore, to candidates of other parties in the Yagba Federal Constituency contest, this is candid advice: do not waste your hard-earned resources on a contest whose outcome is already clear in the hearts of the people. Politics should not be about ego; it should be about the interest of Yagba.
Join hands with Leke. Support him to continue the good work. History will remember you for choosing progress over a fruitless venture.
