FG Cracks Down on Costly Graduations Below SSS3, Rolls Out Reusable Textbook Policy to Ease Parents’ Burden
The Federal Government Friday banned flashy graduation ceremonies for pupils below Primary 6, JSS3, and SSS3, in bold reforms to slash the financial strain on struggling parents.
Education Minister, Maruf Tunji Alausa and Minister of State Prof. Sulaiman Sai’d unveiled the policy, stressing it will end “unnecessary expenses” forcing families to splash cash on lavish events for lower classes.”Only Primary 6, JSS3, and SSS3 graduations will now be allowed,” the ministers declared during the announcement.
“This curbs the burden on parents amid rising living costs.” In a game-changing move, they introduced durable, standardised textbooks built to last 4-6 years, banning the sale of disposable workbooks bundled with main texts.
The policy lets siblings share books across sessions, cuts waste, and slashes recurring costs, a direct hit at publishers’ gimmicks of yearly “revisions” that are mostly cosmetic tweaks.” This will revolutionise learning by promoting sustainability and equity,” Alausa said, adding a uniform academic calendar nationwide to sync teaching and planning.

The Key reforms include strict revision cycles, only for major content upgrades, not minor layouts, plus caps on approved textbooks per subject and grade, mirroring global standards.
