SDP Applauds INEC for Extending Deadline for Presidential, National Assembly Candidate Uploads
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for extending the deadline for the upload of presidential and National Assembly candidates by an additional three days, describing the decision as a significant step towards ensuring a more inclusive and credible electoral process.
In a statement signed by the party’s National Chairman, Prof. Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe, the SDP praised INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan for approving the extension, saying the move demonstrates the commission’s responsiveness to the concerns of political parties.
The electoral commission had initially fixed Saturday, July 11, 2026, as the deadline for the upload of presidential and National Assembly candidates. However, following a request by the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), the deadline has now been shifted to Tuesday, July 14, 2026.
According to the SDP, the extension reflects INEC’s commitment to fairness, inclusiveness and the continued strengthening of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
The party noted that the additional three days would enable political parties to complete the upload of their candidates and resolve outstanding administrative challenges encountered during the nomination process.
It explained that the exercise, which commenced on June 26, 2026, was affected during its first three days by circumstances beyond the control of political parties, making the extension both necessary and timely.
“The additional period will help ensure broader participation and enhance the integrity of the nomination process,” the statement said.
The SDP also commended the leadership of IPAC, led by Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, for its constructive engagement and advocacy on behalf of registered political parties.
According to the party, IPAC’s intervention and INEC’s positive response underscore the value of dialogue, collaboration and mutual respect among stakeholders in Nigeria’s democratic process.
The SDP expressed confidence that the growing cooperation between INEC and IPAC would strengthen institutional trust, encourage greater collaboration among democratic actors and contribute to the consolidation of Nigeria’s democracy.
On behalf of its National Working Committee, state chapters, elected officials, aspirants, candidates and members nationwide, the party congratulated the leadership of INEC and IPAC for what it described as a commendable demonstration of leadership, wisdom and commitment to democratic values.
The party also prayed for divine wisdom and courage for the leadership of both organisations as they continue to discharge their responsibilities in the best interest of Nigeria and its democratic development
