“Rule by Oath, Not Whims”: Prof. Abdullahi Yamma Warns Nigerian Leaders at NSUK Event

Prof. Abdullahi Mohammed Yamma of the Department of Political Sciences, Nasarawa State University Keffi, has urged leaders to adhere to the oath of office taken during their swearing-in ceremony.
He emphasized this during the 57th Inaugural Lecture Series held at the university’s assembly hall, themed “Value-based Leadership Styles: Modelling and Theorizing the Dynamics of Governance in Nigeria”.
According to Prof. Yamma, leaders should view themselves as servants of the people, prioritizing their welfare above personal interests.

He cited examples of exemplary leaders like Sir Ahmadu Bello and Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who implemented free primary education policies in the Northern and Western regions during the First Republic, demonstrating servant leadership by investing in human capital.
The lecturer stressed that leaders should exhibit exemplary character, ensure equitable distribution of resources, and explore Nigeria’s natural resources for the benefit of all citizens, rather than exploiting them for personal gain.
He emphasized that Nigeria is rich in human and natural resources, and effective leadership is needed to harness these resources for national development.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Sa’adatu Hassan Liman, commended Prof. Yamma for his efforts and encouraged other professors to contribute to the academic project, promoting research and innovation.
She described the topic as relevant, given the current state of leadership in Nigeria, and hoped that it would provide insights into effective leadership.
Other speakers at the event praised Prof. Yamma for his courage and academic integrity, urging him to sustain his efforts.
They noted that his academic records have had a positive impact on lecturers and students, and expressed confidence in his continued contributions to the university and the nation.
