FCT indegeneous students laud Wike on scholarship, seek end to teachers strike

The President of the Abuja Indigenous Students Association (AISA) Comrade Aliyu Hassan Hamza, has commended the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for disbursing scholarships to the indigenous students of the territory learning across various tertiary institutions across the country.
Hamza, who gave the commendation at a press briefing in Abuja, on Wednesday, said that the disbursement of the scholarships is a life line for the beneficiaries, saying the intervention came at the right time when the students are resuming back to their respective institutions.
“As leaders of the Abuja indigenous students, we acknowledged that the scholarship support by Wike is a life line for the beneficial students which help them to reduce the burden in the course of their studies,”he said.
The students union, also espressed their concern over the ongoing primary and secondary schools teachers following directive by the FCT wing of the Nigeria Union Teachers (NUT).
He said the resumption of the teachers strike action is troubling, saying majority of the indigenous students attend public primary and secondary schools across the six area councils of the FCT.
He said the ongoing teachers strike action may disrupt the academic school calendar like it happened during the last strike, saying there was urgent need for the Minister Wike to summon the six area council chairmen and stakeholders in the education sector including union officials for emergency meeting in order resolve the impasse.
“Because the biggest disruption at this stage is the ongoing FCT teachers strike which is dangerous because we still remember that the strike lasted for over 13 weeks and effects was severe, hence, the students union is appealing to the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to intervene so that students and pupils can go back to their classes,”he said.
According to him, the closure of the public primary and secondary schools across the FCT because of the strike could cause a severe damage to the future of the children, in which he issued 78 hours ultimatum for the relevant stakeholders to end the strike action.
