Amaechi has strong character but insists on having his way – Dalun

Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, has described ex-Rivers State Governor and immediate past Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as a politician of strong character whose major flaw is his insistence on always having his way.
Dalung made the assessment during a recent interview on Symfoni TV, where he offered a balanced view of Amaechi’s political persona amid Nigeria’s intricate power dynamics.

“Rotimi Amaechi has strong character, but his problem is wanting to have his way,” Dalung stated, highlighting Amaechi’s firmness and decisiveness as key to his rise in national politics and his boldness in challenging vested interests.
He, however, noted that these same qualities often spark conflicts, especially in scenarios demanding compromise and teamwork.
According to Dalung, Amaechi’s conviction-driven approach earns admiration from allies but turns into a liability when building consensus is key in Nigeria’s complex political terrain, particularly within party structures and alliances.
The ex-sports minister insisted that strong character alone cannot guarantee enduring success at the national level, where balancing diverse interests is crucial.
Dalung attributed Amaechi’s setbacks not to incompetence or inexperience, but to his reluctance to defer personal convictions in group settings.
He broadened the discourse to Nigerian politics, blaming many intra-party crises on ego battles rather than ideology or public good, and urged leaders to prioritise democratic processes over personal agendas.
Dalung praised Amaechi’s public service record but stressed that true leadership demands knowing when to stand firm and when to concede for the collective interest.
