Doctor Freed After Family Pays 50 million Ransom in Nigeria Kidnapping

A kidnapped physician, Dr. Ibrahim Tahir, walked free this week after his family handed over a 50 million naira ransom roughly $35,000, to his abductors.

The ordeal began Jan. 2 when gunmen snatched Dr. Tahir and his younger brother from their home on City Pride Road in Igbira Camp, a neighborhood here in Edo State.

The brothers were opening their compound gate when the attackers struck.

Tragedy followed swiftly. On Jan. 5, rescuers found the brother’s body near Orley River, also along City Pride Road.

Authorities believe the kidnappers executed him.

Dr. Tahir’s father told reporters that the family scraped together the ransom in two payments, 20 million naira followed by 30 million, relying on loans from friends, aid from nongovernmental organizations, and donations from well-wishers.

The doctor was released Wednesday around 8 a.m.

The physician suffered a gunshot wound to his leg during captivity, his father said.

Vigilantes and local hunters who ambushed the kidnappers ahead of the handover reported killing one of the gunmen in the ensuing shootout.
