President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has placed women at the heart of the All Progressives Congress’ preparations for the 2027 general election, directing Dr Betta Edu and members of the party’s Women Mobilisation Directorate to intensify nationwide grassroots engagement.

The directive was issued on Wednesday during the inauguration of the APC Presidential Campaign Council at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Tinubu praised Nigerian women for their contributions to the country’s political development and the APC’s electoral fortunes, describing them as a formidable force capable of influencing the outcome of elections.

“Women are the greatest mobilisers,” the President said.

He urged the campaign council to harness the numerical strength, organisational capacity and community influence of women to strengthen the party’s campaign and advance its bid for another presidential mandate.

The President’s charge places additional responsibility on Edu, who heads the Women Mobilisation Directorate, to coordinate the party’s women networks and expand engagement with voters across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

40 Million Votes Target

The Women Mobilisation Directorate has reportedly set a target of securing 40 million women’s votes for the Tinubu-Shettima ticket through a nationwide structure covering 176,846 communities.

The proposed framework emphasises ward-level organisation, household visits, community meetings and polling-unit mobilisation, moving beyond conventional campaign rallies.

The strategy also seeks to strengthen engagement with women in rural communities, markets, professional associations, cooperatives and faith-based organisations.

Political observers will be watching how the directorate translates the ambitious target into measurable participation, particularly through voter outreach, campaign coordination and sustained engagement with communities.

Women’s Economic Interests in Focus

The APC’s mobilisation efforts are also expected to draw on initiatives associated with First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, whose engagements with women and empowerment programmes have featured in preparations for the election.

At a pre-inaugural Women’s Summit and Empowerment Programme held in Abuja on October 5, women stakeholders gathered from different parts of the country, while livelihood-support items, including motorbikes and farm trucks, were distributed to beneficiaries.

Such initiatives highlight the connection between women’s economic interests and political engagement.

For the campaign, however, sustaining support will require more than public gatherings. Women voters will also assess economic conditions, household purchasing power, business opportunities, security, education and access to social services.

Edu Calls for Unity and Discipline

Edu has expressed confidence in the ability of APC women to contribute significantly to the President’s re-election campaign, advocating unity, discipline and continuous grassroots engagement.

The inauguration of the Presidential Campaign Council provides a formal platform for coordinating the party’s mobilisation structures as preparations for 2027 gather momentum.

The challenge now is to ensure that the women’s network operates effectively across communities, communicates government policies clearly and responds to voters’ concerns.

Tinubu’s directive signals that APC women are expected to play a central role in the campaign. Whether the party can convert its mobilisation plans into votes will depend on the effectiveness of its grassroots organisation and the credibility of its engagement with the electorate.
